Run DISM to repair the Windows component store, restart, and then retry Windows Update; Microsoft identifies error 0x80073712 as a required update file being damaged or missing.^1^
1. Repair the component store
- Open Start, type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator, then approve the prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Let it reach 100%. Do not close the window, even if progress appears to pause.
- Restart the PC.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and retry KB5127648.
KB5127648 applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 and produces builds 26100.9711, 26200.9711, and 26300.9711 respectively. Its published known-issues section does not list installation error 0x80073712, so there is no documented KB-specific workaround to apply.^2^
2. If DISM succeeds but the update still fails
Use Windows 11’s nondestructive repair reinstall:
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet.
- Open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Select whether Windows may restart automatically, then select OK.
- Allow Windows to download and reinstall the current OS version.
- Restart, then return to Settings → Windows Update and check again.
This reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves installed applications, personal files, and settings.^3^
If Reinstall now is absent, it can be unavailable when:
- The PC is managed by work or school.
- Windows Update is controlled by MDM, Group Policy, Autopatch, or another managed update service.
- The required Windows 11 servicing level is not installed.^3^
On a managed device, contact the administrator rather than changing update policies. If the repair reinstall completes but KB5127648 still fails, check for a newer cumulative security update first because later cumulative updates include earlier fixes. If none is offered, provide Microsoft Support with the error code and the logs under C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.
Version note
If this PC is running Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, KB5127648 is its final monthly security update; Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest supported Windows 11 version afterward.^2^
