I don't want to upgrade to 365, I'd like to continue using my MS Office Home and Student 2021 software, how to re-activate it?

It seems that MS turned off my MS-Word sorftware: it still opens, but all functionality is off, the only evident option is a button to "upgrade to 365". I don't want to spend money and upgrade, I just want to continue using the Word software that I own. How can I re-activate the copy of Word that's on my MacBook, it is part of the "Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021" package that I purchased a few years ago?

Please uninstall your Office apps. To uninstall, you move all Office apps, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams to trash bin.

Then download and install this latest version, and see if it works. https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26102720_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg

On Mac, this usually happens when Office is signed in with the wrong account, the install was deactivated, or the current app build is not accepting the Office Home & Student 2021 license.

    Try this in order:

    1. Sign back in with the account that owns Office Home & Student 2021
      • Open Word.
      • If Sign in appears, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the 2021 purchase.
      • If Word was deactivated, signing in reactivates Office.
    2. Check whether Word is using the wrong license/account
      • If Word is signed in with a different Microsoft, work, or school account, sign out of that account.
      • Then sign in again with the Microsoft account that stores the Office Home & Student 2021 license.
    3. Reinstall from the Microsoft account that owns the license
      • Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and install the product tied to that account.
      • If the apps were already installed but activation is broken, reinstalling from the licensed account can restore the perpetual license activation.
    4. If the Mac App Store or current Mac build is causing the problem, remove and reinstall the Office apps
      • Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
      • In Finder > Applications, locate the Office apps, control-click each app, and choose Move to Trash.
      • Reinstall the Office apps directly from Microsoft.
      • This is the supported reinstall path for perpetual one-time licenses on Mac.
    5. If the current version says the 2021 license is not supported, install an earlier Mac build
      • Microsoft Q&A answers for this exact Mac issue recommend uninstalling the current Office for Mac release and installing version 16.113 instead, then opening Word and signing in with the account that holds the Office 2021 license.
      • This is specifically reported for cases where newer Mac builds show prompts to activate Microsoft 365 instead of honoring Office 2021.
    6. If Office was offline too long, reconnect and sign in again
      • Microsoft 365 apps can enter reduced functionality if they cannot verify status for about 30 days.
      • Reconnecting to the internet and signing in can restore activation behavior.

If the Mac currently shows only an Upgrade to Microsoft 365 path, the most relevant fix is usually:

    • remove the current Office apps,
    • reinstall the Mac Office apps from Microsoft using the account that owns Office Home & Student 2021,
    • then sign in with that same account,
    • and if the current build still rejects the license, install 16.113 and activate again.
