An Azure service that enables the connection of on-premises networks to Azure through site-to-site virtual private networks.
Likely cause (confirmed vs possible): this error usually comes from either GatewaySubnet configuration drift or a transient backend capacity/provisioning issue for the selected zone-redundant SKU in that region. Since your Public IP is Standard and the failure is VmssGatewayDeploymentFailed, both paths should be checked in order.
- Validate gateway prerequisites before retry
-
- Confirm GatewaySubnet exists, is named exactly GatewaySubnet, and has enough address space for VpnGw1AZ growth.
-
- Confirm no NSG or UDR is associated to GatewaySubnet (these can break gateway provisioning).
-
- Keep the gateway Public IP as Standard SKU (required for AZ SKUs).

-
- Remove failed gateway resource cleanly, then redeploy
-
- If deployment is stuck in Failed, delete the failed VPN gateway resource and redeploy to the same VNet only after subnet/route/NSG checks pass.
-
- Do not modify active production routing until the new gateway reaches Succeeded.
-
- Run targeted validation for Point-to-Site dependencies
-
-
- After gateway deployment succeeds, configure P2S (IKEv2 + cert auth) and validate cert chain/EKU/client trust.
- - Use Microsoft troubleshooting flow for P2S and gateway deployment/connectivity checks. -

-
- If backend provisioning still fails, treat as regional capacity/platform issue
-
- Retry in a different region (or different supported gateway SKU) to isolate regional capacity constraints.
- - Open a support request with Correlation ID, failed deployment timestamp (UTC), subscription ID, region, VNet, and gateway resource ID. -

- Recovery / rollback guidance
-
- If this is a replacement of an old Basic gateway, keep rollback options documented before cutover.
- - If production users depend on the old path, avoid irreversible deletion until new gateway validation is complete. - Validation checks - - Provisioning state must become Succeeded on the VPN gateway. -
- Effective routes/associations on GatewaySubnet must show no NSG/UDR conflicts.
-
- P2S client should establish IKEv2 tunnel and pass end-to-end traffic test to target subnets.
- If you share the exact GatewaySubnet prefix size, effective route table, and whether any NSG is attached, I can help you do a strict preflight checklist before the next deployment attempt.
