While using the M.D.A. on it's own with no other second line of defenses, noticed it welcomed in dangerous downloads instead of instantly detecting and removing them within seconds, as its rivals normally do.In one such example, the installed M.D.A. didn't mind one bit of a dangerous downloaded download getting installed and can fully continue on from there ,as completely normal. As soon as i moved to one of the other free antiviruses regardless of where it came from?,and went through the same experiment noticed the very same downloaded and installed download was instantly detected and removed and went through other options to try to explore that download only to fail. The rival free antivirus does not allow it no matter how i try to explore dangerous downloads,as shown on the screen. Was the M.D.A. made to mostly welcome in dangerous downloads?,instead of only allowing a few or none in?.Like to add?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not designed to permit dangerous downloads; because the file reportedly installed and ran, stop using the live sample, run Microsoft Defender Offline, and then validate Defender with Microsoft’s harmless test file.

Check and clean the computer

  1. Remove the downloaded file without opening it again.
  2. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
  3. Check whether the file appears under detected, quarantined, or allowed threats.
    • If it is under Allowed threats, select it and choose Don’t allow.
  4. Select Scan options → Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) → Scan now.
    • Save open work first: the computer restarts and scans from the Windows Recovery Environment, making it harder for persistent malware to hide.
    • After Windows restarts, review Protection history for the result.^1^
  5. For an independent Microsoft second-opinion scan, download a fresh copy of Microsoft Safety Scanner and run a full scan. It is an on-demand scanner, expires ten days after download, and does not replace real-time antivirus protection.^2^

Do not repeat the experiment with known or suspected live malware, even inside an ordinary virtual machine connected to your network.

Verify Defender was actually providing full protection

Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings, then check:

  • Real-time protection: On
  • Cloud-delivered protection: On
  • Automatic sample submission: On, unless privacy or organizational policy prevents it
  • Tamper protection: On
  • Exclusions: Remove any unrecognized file, folder, extension, or process exclusions

Real-time protection scans files and programs as they are accessed or executed. Cloud-delivered protection supplies updated detection intelligence, while exclusions prevent Defender from scanning the excluded content.^1^

Then select Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates. Security intelligence contains current threat information used during scanning.

If another antivirus is installed and active, Microsoft Defender Antivirus normally turns itself off automatically. Therefore, comparisons must be performed with only one active antivirus product at a time; otherwise, the test may not measure Defender at all.^3^

Validate without real malware

Use Microsoft’s documented Cloud-delivered protection demonstration instead of a dangerous payload. Its test file is harmless and only simulates a virus.

With real-time and cloud-delivered protection enabled:

  1. Download and extract Microsoft’s documented test archive.
  2. Attempt to open the extracted test file.
  3. Defender should detect and delete it; a Threat found notification may also appear.

If the harmless test file executes, the documented cloud-protection validation has failed and the Defender configuration or connectivity requires investigation.^4^

If the original file is confirmed malicious

Different antivirus engines can produce different results or detect a sample at different stages. False negatives can occur with any threat-protection product; a single result does not establish that Defender intentionally permits malware.^5^

Submit the original file—without executing it—to Microsoft’s sample submission portal:

  1. Choose the option indicating that the file is suspected malware.
  2. Identify Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the product involved.
  3. Include the filename, download source, detection from the other antivirus, approximate test time, and reproduction steps.
  4. Retain the resulting submission ID and monitor the determination.

Microsoft accepts suspected malware and incorrectly detected files for analysis; signing in allows submission tracking.^6^

The Microsoft Defender for Cloud tag is relevant only if this occurred in an Azure workload using Defender for Cloud malware scanning. For an ordinary Windows PC, the applicable components are Windows Security, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and SmartScreen.
