For a personal Microsoft account such as Hotmail/Outlook.com, the phone number used for verification is managed in the account security settings.
If access to the account is still available:
- Open the Security tab of the Microsoft account: https://account.microsoft.com/security
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Review the listed verification methods.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Add another method such as:
- a recovery email address
- Microsoft Authenticator
- a passkey
- After the new method is confirmed, remove the old phone/security method if it is no longer valid.
Important details:
- The option to add a new phone number may not be available for personal Microsoft accounts.
- Microsoft is phasing out SMS for personal account authentication and recovery.
- Up to 10 verification methods can be added.
- Do not change all security info at the same time, or the account may be restricted for 30 days.
If verification codes are not arriving:
- Check that the code is being sent to the correct mailbox or phone.
- Do not make repeated code requests, because unusual activity can temporarily block code delivery.
- If the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers, change that setting and request another code.
- VOIP numbers cannot be used for sign-in or verification codes; a mobile number is required.
- In some cases, delivery delays happen because of regional traffic and resolve automatically after some time.
If access to the current phone number or other security info is lost:
- Start signing in to the Microsoft account.
- At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the prompts to replace the security info.
- If all security info is replaced, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
If the sign-in page says the phone number is already linked to another Microsoft account:
- Select Transfer if that option is shown and the number should be moved.
- If Transfer is not shown, select Change number and use a different number.
- If the number is newly acquired, the transfer option may appear after 30 days.
If sign-in is blocked and self-service does not resolve it, use the Sign-in Helper tool or Contact Support. Support agents cannot send verification codes, password reset links, or change account details.
