OneDrive issue

I have tried several things. Yesterday for whatever reason my OneDrive was having trouble syncing. My important files had a red X on them. I went through the troubleshooting steps and that seemed to worsen my situation. The files I need are now missing or older files from earlier in the year are present. OneDrive restore for whatever reason has failed 2 times in a row stating it couldn’t finish restoring. I’m in the middle of my third attempt. At this point it just seems I’m at a lost cause and I can’t get ahold of a real person. I am not computer savvy so I’m not sure what I could have done wrong.

    Hi, let me help you.

Let your third restore finish first, and don’t unlink or reset anything until it’s done.

Then go to onedrive.live.com (or office.com if it’s a work account), sign in, and look for your files there. If they’re missing, open the Recycle Bin on that page and restore them from it. If a file is there but it’s an old version, right-click it, choose Version history, and pick the newest one.

If the restore fails again, try the same tool on the website instead of the app: click the gear icon, then Options, then Restore your OneDrive.

Since OneDrive Restore has already failed twice, stop repeating full restores for now.

    Try this in order:

    1. Pause changes on this PC If OneDrive is still syncing, let the current action stop or close OneDrive. This helps prevent more changes from being pushed while recovering files.
    2. Check OneDrive on the web first Sign in to OneDrive on the web and treat that as the main copy to inspect.
      • Check whether the missing files are in the Recycle bin.
      • If specific files are present but older than expected, check whether a newer copy still exists elsewhere in OneDrive.
    3. Use file restore carefully OneDrive can restore your entire OneDrive to a previous point in time, but only for actions within the last 30 days. Important: files or folders created after the restore point are sent to the OneDrive Recycle Bin. They can be restored from there.
    4. Search the local computer If files were saved outside OneDrive, or had not finished syncing, search the PC directly:
      • Use File Explorer to search for the missing file names.
      • Check the Windows Recycle Bin.
      • If a OneDrive folder shows Sync pending but no file is visible, turn on View > Hidden items in File Explorer and check for hidden files.
    5. If a folder is stuck on Sync pending If no hidden file is causing it:
      • Create a new folder.
      • Copy the files from the affected folder into the new folder.
      • Delete the old Sync pending folder.
    6. If a specific file will not sync Move that file out of the OneDrive folder temporarily:
      • Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon and select Close OneDrive.
      • In File Explorer, move the problem file to a location outside OneDrive, such as **C:**.
      • Start OneDrive again from Start.
      • Wait until OneDrive shows Up to date.
      • Copy the file back into OneDrive.
    7. If many sync errors started at once For large numbers of sync errors, a supported reset path is to stop syncing the library and sync it again to get fresh data. Do not rename the synced folder after sync is established, because that breaks the sync relationship.
    8. If files still cannot be found For personal accounts, use Contact Microsoft Support from the OneDrive support flow. Mobile users can also open the OneDrive app and gently shake the device to contact support.

A few key points for this situation:

    • A red X commonly indicates a OneDrive sync problem.
    • If storage is full, OneDrive cannot upload, edit, or sync new files.
    • If OneDrive is not running, restart it from Start.
    • If needed, try unlinking and relinking the OneDrive account.
