Windows Support: Agent used third-party forum for generic key during remote session — is this normal and should I be concerned?

During an official Microsoft Support chat for a Windows activation issue, the agent (Faizan Ahmad) requested a Quick Assist remote session. While connected, he navigated to elevenforum.com in my browser and attempted to use a generic product key listed on that public forum as a troubleshooting step. He stated this was a normal process for troubleshooting license issues.

I ended the session because I was not comfortable with a support agent sourcing keys from a non-Microsoft website.

Is it standard procedure for Microsoft Support agents to use publicly available generic keys from third-party forums during remote sessions? If not, what is the recommended way to report this behavior, and are there any account or security risks I should be aware of after this type of interaction?

Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Windows Community.

Good afternoon, @Dakota Martin !The use of generic installation keys (GVLK or default installation keys) may occur during technical diagnostic, configuration, or support procedures, depending on the specific scenario and applicable Microsoft guidelines.

It is important to clarify that these keys do not grant a Windows license, do not replace a valid commercial key, and—on their own—do not activate the operating system. Furthermore, their use does not necessarily pose any risk to your device.

Do you have any other questions? I would be happy to help.
