How to make 2-sided printing permanent

In Widows 11, on an HP printer, in the settings, there is the option to select 2-sided printing by changing "not installed" to "installed". Once having done this the 2-sided printing works. But when you go off and do other things, something changes the feature back to "not installed". I do not know what is doing this or how to make it stop. I changed the feature "Let windows control your default printer" to on and off with no change in what is turning the feature off?

Yes, that's correct. The Windows 11 computer has its own printer driver, and that driver may be responsible for the duplex setting reverting to Not Installed.

I recommend updating or reinstalling the HP LaserJet P2055dn driver on your Windows 11 computer.

You can download the compatible driver from HP's official support website.

After reinstalling, set Duplex Unit to Installed under Printer Properties → Device Settings and test two-sided printing.

    Thank you for the clarification.

    Hello,

If you are using an HP LaserJet P2055dn, the printer supports automatic two-sided printing. If the duplex option keeps reverting to "Not Installed", the first thing to check is the printer driver's automatic configuration.

HP documents the following troubleshooting procedure:

Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.

Right-click the HP printer and select Printer properties.

    Open the Device Settings tab.

Under Installable Options, find Automatic Configuration.

If Update Now is available, select it and click Apply. Allow the driver to retrieve the printer's configuration.

If duplex is still not detected, set Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing) to Installed manually and click Apply.

Open Printing preferences and enable automatic two-sided printing as the default.

Close and reopen the application, then test a multi-page document.

HP notes that when automatic configuration fails, the duplex unit may default to "Not Installed".

If the setting reverts again, please check the driver name under Printer properties → Advanced, and whether the printer uses a USB, WSD, Standard TCP/IP or shared connection.

For an HP Universal Print Driver installation, HP provides specific guidance for correcting duplex detection.

I would avoid removing the printer or changing network-port settings until the driver and connection type have been identified.

Microsoft — Autoconfiguration During Device Installation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/print/autoconfiguration-during-device-installation

If possible, please also confirm the Windows version and whether the "Not Installed" setting returns immediately after reopening Printer properties or only after restarting Windows.

Disclosure: Prepared with AI assistance and checked against official HP and Microsoft documentation. The issue has not been reproduced on the affected printer.

    Hello CG Stroh,

Thank you for confirming the printer model.

The HP LaserJet P2055dn includes built-in automatic duplex printing, so you should be able to use two-sided printing without installing any additional hardware.

You do not need to remove and reinstall the printer immediately. Please try the following first:

    1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.

Right-click HP LaserJet P2055dn and select Printer properties.

    Open the Device Settings tab.

Under Installable Options, change Duplex Unit to Installed.

    Click Apply, then OK.

Open Printing Preferences → Finishing and enable Print on Both Sides. Test with a document.

If the setting keeps reverting to Not Installed, I recommend checking the installed driver. A generic or incorrectly configured driver may not retain the printer's hardware options.

You can then try removing and reinstalling the printer using a compatible HP driver:

HP LaserJet P2055dn – Drivers and Downloads

Microsoft – Fix printer driver compatibility issues

Before reinstalling, could you confirm whether the printer is connected directly to your computer through USB or shared over the network?

This will help determine the best way to reinstall the printer and prevent the duplex setting from changing unexpectedly.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Q&A.

    Hello CG Stroh,

Since the duplex printing option keeps reverting to Not Installed, the problem may be related to the HP printer driver failing to retain or correctly detect the printer's hardware configuration.

I recommend trying the following steps:

    1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.

Right-click your HP printer and select Printer properties.

Navigate to the Device Settings tab.

Under Installable Options, locate Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing) and select Installed.

If available, select Automatic Configuration → Update Now to allow the driver to detect the printer's capabilities.

Click Apply, then OK, and test two-sided printing.

If the setting continues to revert, check whether you are using the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD). Consider updating or reinstalling the latest compatible HP driver for your printer model.

For additional guidance, please refer to these HP resources:

HP: Unable to auto-duplex after installing the HP Universal Print Driver

HP: Automatic duplex printing not working in Windows 11

    HP Software and Driver Downloads

To help investigate further, could you please confirm the exact HP printer model and whether the setting reverts after restarting the computer, reconnecting the printer, or simply after some time?

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to driver configuration or Windows printer management.

Update the HP driver’s automatic configuration first, then set two-sided printing in Printing preferences; changing only Duplex Unit → Installed can be overwritten when the driver next queries the printer.

    Make duplex detection persistent

    These controls are separate:

    • Device Settings → Duplex Unit → Installed tells the driver that duplex hardware exists.
    • Printing preferences → Print on both sides sets duplex as the normal print-job default.

For an HP model that supports automatic duplex printing:

    1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click the HP printer and select Printer properties—not the similarly named Properties or Printing preferences.
    3. Open Device Settings.
    4. Under Installable Options:
      • Set Automatic Configuration to Update Now, if offered.
      • After the update, verify Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing) shows Installed.
    5. Select Apply, then OK.

HP specifically recommends Automatic Configuration → Update Now for affected LaserJet/PageWide drivers. If automatic detection fails, the duplex unit can remain or revert to Not Installed.^1^

Windows printer autoconfiguration uses bidirectional communication to query installable features such as the duplex unit. The driver then updates its stored configuration and UI from the returned value; that process can overwrite a manual selection.^2^

Set two-sided printing as the default

After the duplex unit remains detected:

    1. Return to Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click the printer and select Printing preferences.
    3. Set Print on both sides, Duplex, or Two-sided printing to:
      • Long-edge for normal book-style pages, or
      • Short-edge for pages flipped like a calendar.
    4. Select Apply, then OK.

Settings made in Printing preferences become the printer’s default for applications using that queue.^3^ An application may still retain its own last-used print choice; for example, Word can preserve a one-sided selection for the current user session rather than reload the driver default each time.^4^

The Let Windows manage my default printer option only controls which printer Windows selects—typically the last printer used. It does not control whether a duplex unit is installed or whether jobs default to two-sided printing.^5^

    If it changes back again

The printer/driver is still reporting the duplex capability incorrectly. Reinstall the queue with the correct HP software:

    1. Confirm the exact HP model supports automatic duplex; some models support only manual two-sided printing.
    2. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
    3. Select the HP printer and choose Remove.
    4. Restart Windows.
    5. Re-add it using HP Smart or the current HP driver for that exact model.
    6. Repeat Automatic Configuration → Update Now, then set the duplex default under Printing preferences.

HP recommends removing and re-adding the printer when refreshing its Windows 11 duplex configuration does not work.^6^ Microsoft also documents that reinstalling refreshes the driver files and settings; use a driver matching Windows 11 and the PC’s system type.^7^

If this is a shared printer supplied by a print server, have its administrator check the server-side HP driver and bidirectional support. With Point and Print, both the server’s port monitor and the client driver must support bidirectional communication for autoconfiguration to work correctly.^8^
