A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the sign-in page asks for a code from Microsoft Authenticator but no code appears in the app, use one of these supported paths:
- Check whether the sign-in request was sent to a different device. If Authenticator was previously active on an older phone, the push notification may have gone there instead of the current phone. If the old phone is still available, open Authenticator there and approve the sign-in.
- Try another verification method. On the sign-in page, select an option such as Sign in another way or I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now. If a phone number, email, passkey, security key, or another method is already registered, use that instead.
- For a personal Microsoft account, add or update sign-in methods after access is restored. Go to the Microsoft account Security page, select Manage how I sign in, then Add a new way to sign in or verify. Supported methods can include an email address, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey. Keeping more than one method configured helps prevent lockout.
- If Authenticator is installed but not completing sign-in, check the app and phone state:
- Make sure the app is unlocked.
- Make sure notifications are enabled.
- Make sure the phone has internet access. Verification codes do not require internet, but sign-in notifications and responses do.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
- Verify the phone date and time settings are correct.
- If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- If the issue continues, send logs from the app. In Microsoft Authenticator, open the top-level menu and select Send feedback.
- If this is a work or school account and no other sign-in method is available, contact the organization’s IT admin. The admin can reset MFA methods so Authenticator can be registered again on the new phone.
- If this is a personal account and no alternate verification method is available, contact Microsoft Support after sending feedback logs.
About removing Authenticator: if Authenticator is removed before another sign-in method is added, account access can be lost. Add another verification method first, then remove the old or unused Authenticator method from account security settings.
