Pivot Table causes Excel to crash on MacOS

I'm using Version 16.114.3 of Excel for Mac on a Mac Studio with M1 ultra chip, 64gb Ram.

Excel was working fine up until this morning.

Whenever I try to create a pivot table, excel crashes.

For pre-existing pivot tables, excel crashes if I try to change the fields.

This is intolerable and it does not appear that Microsoft provides any support for its Microsoft 365 members.

These files are simple text and numbers. 60 rows and 11 columns - and it crashes.

There are no merged cells, formulas, or formatting. Its just values. And Excel crashes.

Since this started I have

  • removed all preferences
  • looked for any add-ins.
  • deleted excel and reinstalled
  • spent an entire day looking for support.

This is absolute garbage. I'm about ready to leave shitty Microsoft products forever if this doesn't get fixed.

Temporarily roll Excel back from 16.114.3 to the immediately preceding build and repeat the same PivotTable operation, because reinstalling Excel currently just reinstalls 16.114.3.

Test the previous Excel build

Microsoft’s update history identifies 16.114.3 as the October 27 build and 16.114.2 as the immediately preceding October 26 build.^1^

  1. Quit Excel and make backup copies of the affected workbooks.
  2. In Finder → Applications, move Microsoft Excel.app to the Trash. Do not remove the other Office applications or their data.
  3. Install the official Excel 16.114.2 update package: Microsoft Excel 16.114.2 installer
  4. Open Excel → About Microsoft Excel and confirm that it reports 16.114.2.
  5. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, temporarily turn off automatic updates so that 16.114.3 is not immediately reinstalled. Rolling back and temporarily disabling updates is also Microsoft Q&A’s recommended workaround when Office starts crashing after a recent update.^2^
  6. Test both scenarios:
    • Create a new workbook, enter a small values-only data set, and create a PivotTable.
    • Open a copy of an existing workbook and change one PivotTable field.

If 16.114.2 also crashes, repeat the test with 16.113.4, the last listed build before the 16.114 release family. Its official Excel package is available from the same update-history page.^1^

Be aware that Microsoft states only the most recently released version in that history is supported, so rollback is a temporary diagnostic/workaround rather than a permanent configuration.

Interpret the result

  • 16.114.2 or 16.113.4 works: This isolates the failure to a newer Excel build closely enough to remain productive while reporting it. Keep automatic updates paused only until a later build is available, then retest on a workbook copy.
  • Older builds also crash: The build is not isolated as the trigger. Test from a newly created macOS administrator account via System Settings → Users & Groups. This checks user-specific containers and saved application state without repeating the preference reset and reinstall already completed.^3^
  • Only existing files crash: Include one sanitized failing workbook in the support case. If a brand-new values-only workbook also crashes, state that explicitly because it rules out workbook complexity.

Microsoft’s current Excel for Mac known-issues page does not list this specific 16.114.3 PivotTable creation/field-change crash, so there is no published PivotTable-specific fix at present.^4^

Report and escalate

In Excel, use the feedback control in the upper-right corner and submit the crash as a reproducible problem. Microsoft’s release guidance specifically directs users to that control for reporting issues.^5^

Include:

  • Excel versions that fail and the older version that works, if any
  • Exact macOS version
  • Mac Studio M1 Ultra
  • Reproduction steps: Insert → PivotTable, or changing a field in an existing PivotTable
  • Whether a new values-only workbook also fails
  • Approximate crash time
  • The macOS crash report from Console → Crash Reports, with personal or organizational information removed
  • A sanitized sample workbook if possible

Update: Rolling back to 16.113.4 solved everything. That was the solution!

    Thank you everyone!

I've updated Excel to version 16.114.2 as adviced, but my existing pivot tables are still crashing. Any other recommendations?
