Hi,

Since your camera appears zoomed in across multiple apps and websites, the issue may be caused by a Windows camera setting rather than an individual app.

Try these steps on your Surface Pro:

Turn off Automatic framing: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select your front-facing camera, and look under Windows Studio Effects. If Automatic framing is enabled, turn it off. This feature can crop and zoom the camera image automatically.

Check Studio Effects: Select the network, sound, or battery icon on the taskbar and open Studio Effects. If Automatic framing is enabled there, disable it.

Test the Camera app: Open the built-in Windows Camera app and check whether the preview is still zoomed in. If the image looks normal there but not in a website or another app, check that app's camera settings.

Restart your Surface: If the camera remains zoomed in everywhere, restart the device and check for available Windows and Surface driver updates.

If Automatic framing is already off, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and check whether any other camera effects or controls are changing the image.

One important question: Is the camera zoomed in even when you open the built-in Windows Camera app, before joining a video call? That will help determine whether the problem is system-wide or app-specific.

Turn off Automatic framing in Windows Studio Effects, which crops and zooms the camera image to keep a detected person centered and can affect every app and website using the camera.^1^

    Disable Automatic framing

    1. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.
    2. Under Connected cameras, select the front-facing Surface camera.
    3. In the camera preview settings, find Windows Studio Effects or Camera Effects.
    4. Turn Automatic framing Off.
    5. Close and reopen the Camera app or browser, then test again.

You can also open Quick Settings from the lower-right corner of the taskbar, select Studio effects, and disable Automatic framing there. Studio Effects are applied at the camera level, so an enabled effect normally carries across applications.^1^

If the settings page shows only Basic settings and no Windows Studio Effects section, the Surface probably does not support that feature. Windows Studio Effects requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, compatible NPU hardware, and the appropriate driver.^1^

If Automatic framing is already off or unavailable

    1. Open the affected app’s video settings and look for options named Auto framing, Center Stage, Keep me centered, Crop, or Zoom. Disable them.
    2. Test with the built-in Camera app:
      • If Camera displays the full image but one particular app or website remains cropped, reset that app’s own video settings or test another browser.
      • If Camera is also cropped, continue with the Surface checks below.
    3. Open the Surface app and expand Help & support.
    4. Check the update status and install any available Surface and Windows updates.
    5. Select Get help in the Surface app to run its device checks. Microsoft also recommends running the automated camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app.^2^

    Driver fallback

Only use this if the image remains incorrectly cropped after disabling effects and installing updates:

    1. Search for and open Device Manager.
    2. Expand Cameras.
    3. Double-click Intel(R) TGL AVStream Camera or Intel(R) AVStream Camera.
    4. Open Driver → Uninstall Device.
    5. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, choose Uninstall, and restart the Surface. Windows should reinstall the camera device.^2^

Do not uninstall the camera driver on a Surface Pro X. Microsoft states that restoring an uninstalled driver on that model requires a full system reset.^2^

If the cropping remains in the Camera app after these steps, use Surface app → Help & support → Get help to start a support or service request.
