    1

    Choose to print a document.

ON the print preview dialog, at the top, ensure you have the printer set to your physical printer, not the 'Microsoft Print to PDF' virtual printer.

Are you then able to print your document?

    2

If you have selected your physical printer on that drop down menu and that does not resolve the problem:

    Close all open Applications

    Open the Settings App.

Go to Devices and Printer - Printers and Scanners.

    Select your printer.

    Choose 'Printer Properties'

On the resulting dialog, choose the Ports tab

Is the Port set to Print to File?

If so, change that to LPT1 (if your printer is connected by USB) or WSD (if your printer is wireless) and save that setting

    Then try printing again.

This usually means the selected printer is a virtual PDF printer instead of the physical printer.

    Fix it in Windows:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
    3. Select the printer that should print to paper.
    4. Set it as the default printer.
    5. Reopen Word or Excel and try printing again.

Also check inside Word or Excel before printing:

    1. Go to File > Print.
    2. Look at the Printer selection.
    3. If it shows Microsoft Print to PDF or a similar PDF printer, change it to the actual printer.

If the actual printer is not listed:

    1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
    2. Check whether the printer appears there.
    3. If not, add or reinstall the printer, then print a test page from Windows.

If Word keeps asking for a PDF file name after that, restart Word after changing the default printer.
